Happy 2nd Birthday Davey!!!!!
Selena Towanda Davis Braxton Smith AKA Davey was born on the same day as Mariah Carey, March 27th. Okay truthfully, we don’t know his actual birthday and only that he was born in March. I made the executive decision as his mom that he was an Aries because he is way too aggressive to be a Pisces. Which means that he has a late March birthday and if I get to pick the day anyway then I decided he was born on the same day as his imaginary God Mother Mariah Carey!
Most people don’t know his first name is actually Selena and Davey comes from his middle name. I only really all him Selena if he is being really bad. For the first time publicly, I will be explaining the story behind his name and also sharing some exclusive photos of Davey!
The Legend of Selena Wanda Davis
In the summer of 2020 when everyone was having those zoom parties, I was on one with some friends and we were playing one of those Jackbox.tv games. If you don’t know how those games work, they have a bunch of mini games and it’s just overall a silly fun time. One of the prompts of the mini games was to come up with a phrase with the letters “SWD.” At this point in the party, I was pretty crossed so idk if it must be the weed, but I was so confused and couldn’t come up with anything, so I was like I am just going to make a name that uses those letters chile and move on with my life. So, I basically just picked the first names that came to my mind that start with each letter.
S- Selena, for Selena and Selena Gomez equally
W- Wanda Sykes, love her!
D- Davis for Teresa Jane Davis. Now, this is very niche, but she basically sings the song “Diamond in the Sky” from the Sonic R soundtrack. Me and some of my friends were obsessed with this song summer 2020 so it was pretty topical at the time. On my old podcast Pop Daydreams, we did an entire episode about sonic, and Teresa actually saw us tweet about it and listened to the episode! Legend!
Once the mini game was over and we went over the answers, everyone was understandably confused as to who this Selena Wanda Davis person was. I explained that I just chose some random names, but the “damage” was already done. From that moment on Selena Wanda Davis was a part of me and my friend’s lore and lives. At this point in time, she has evolved to basically mean the all-knowing being that is in charge of the universe. Some people call her God, Allah, what have you. Personally, I just refer to her as Selena. The physical embodiment of her is Chaka Khan.
Fast forward to 2021 when I knew I was getting a cat I originally wanted to name them Towanda. Towanda Braxton was my favorite Braxton sister at the time but at this point it actually might be Tamar (I just love her so much.) When I decided to get Davey specifically, he didn’t look like a Towanda. So, we settled on making it his middle name which was perfect because it has the name Wanda already in it! Then we decided that his name could be Davis and we can call him Davey!
Davey’s name is basically a testament to how complex me and my friends’ jokes are. So complex that they require an entire newsletter to understand. I was hesitant to even share this because it is something so specific to my friend group, but I think it’s okay now that it’s been like 3 years. I mainly did it so that if I reference Selena in my newsletter y’all know what I’m talking, I will make sure to clarify if I mean either singer or the made-up figure lmfao. I think I will just say SWD to keep it simple, but I’ll let y’all know lol. This is all very niche, complex, and there are so many layers, so I hope you followed that lol. From now on if you ever hear me, say “Selena is on my side” or “help me Selena” or something of that nature I am usually talking about Selena Wanda Davis aka The Universe. Now, if I see people calling God Selena and they say they made it up y’all know the truth👩🏿⚖️
ANYWAYS Davey is turning 2 today and his favorite artist is Tinashe. I know this because when I first got him, I was constantly watching the Pasadena video and each time it was on he would sit there and watch the entire thing. Whenever we play Tinashe, he always stops what he’s doing and watches or listens. The last time we gave him a bath it was so traumatic that I was holding him in my arms singing 2 On like a lullaby.
Naturally (no pun intended) we had a Tinashe themed birthday party for him yesterday. I made the party at 2pm before I even realized that it was perfect because he’s turning 2. My mind is truly unmatched. Below are photos from that as well. These are just a sliver of the thousands of photos I have of this cat. Many of these are from the folder I have of him on my work computer that plays a slideshow of him. What can I say? I’m obsessed with him! I am his momager after all!
